An awl is a pointed tool for making holes, primarily in leather or wood. Awls come in many different sizes, shapes and types.
The awl handle design allows the user to hold a substantial element in their palm but at the same time is large enough that no fingers are pressed along the blade. The form curves from a large top to a slim middle, where fingers are to be pressed against, and outwards again to a thicker tip, so that fingers do not slide down the handle easily.
This slim hourglass-like form fits naturally in the users whole hand facilitating a firm grip. The form is symmetrical, allowing the user to pick up the handle in any way they deem appropriate and use easily, as it is not restricted to be held in one specific manner. The handle can be rested upright as the top of the handle is flat.
